What Is Clairvoyance?
Clairvoyance — from the French 'clair' (clear) and 'voyance' (vision) — literally means 'clear seeing.' It's the psychic ability to receive visual information beyond the physical senses: images, symbols, colours, scenes, and visions that carry meaning and information the conscious mind couldn't access through ordinary perception.
I was a corporate lawyer until I was 35. I didn't grow up seeing auras or talking to spirits. My abilities showed up uninvited during the most difficult period of my life — a divorce, a career I could no longer tolerate, and a move across continents that stripped away every identity I'd carefully constructed. At first, I thought I was losing my mind. I wasn't. I was gaining a sense I didn't know I had.
Clairvoyance is one of several psychic senses — collectively known as 'the clairs' — and it's the one most people think of when they hear the word 'psychic.' But it's not the most common. Most people's first psychic sense is actually clairsentience — feeling — which is why so many psychically gifted people spend years thinking they're 'just sensitive' or 'too emotional' before they understand what's actually happening.
I didn't develop my abilities through years of meditation in an ashram. I developed them by having everything I knew stripped away until only the truth was left.
The Four 'Clairs' — Clairvoyance, Clairsentience, Clairaudience, Claircognizance
The psychic senses mirror the physical senses, operating on a frequency that most people have been taught to ignore. Here are the four primary 'clairs,' explained without mysticism:
Clairvoyance — Clear Seeing
Receiving visual information: images, symbols, colours, scenes — either in the mind's eye (internal) or, less commonly, overlaid on physical reality (external). A clairvoyant might 'see' a flash of a location they've never visited, a symbol that carries specific meaning for the person they're reading, or a scene that represents a past or future event. In my work, clairvoyance often shows up as rapid-fire images during a reading — like a slideshow my guides are running for me to interpret.
Clairsentience — Clear Feeling
Receiving information through physical sensation and emotion. This is the most common psychic ability and the one most often dismissed as 'being too sensitive.' A clairsentient person walks into a room and immediately feels the emotional atmosphere. They feel other people's pain in their own body. They experience emotions that don't belong to them. If you've ever felt suddenly anxious in a location and later learned something disturbing happened there, that's clairsentience.
Clairaudience — Clear Hearing
Receiving auditory information: words, phrases, names, music, or sounds — almost always internally, as though hearing with an inner ear. Clairaudience is often subtle: a name that drops into your awareness, a phrase repeated in your mind that turns out to be significant, a song that plays in your head with lyrics that answer a question you've been asking. In mediumship, clairaudience is how I receive specific names and messages from the spirit world.
Claircognizance — Clear Knowing
Receiving information as a sudden, complete download of knowledge — without knowing how you know. This is the most difficult clair to trust because it comes without evidence. You simply know something. Claircognizant information arrives fully formed: a certainty about a person's character on first meeting, a knowing that a particular path is wrong before any evidence supports it, a complete understanding of a situation that lands in your awareness whole.
Clairvoyant vs Psychic vs Medium — What's the Difference?
These terms are used interchangeably in popular culture, but they describe different things:
Psychic is the broadest term. A psychic is anyone who receives information through extrasensory means — whether through clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience, or claircognizance. All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. A psychic might read energy, access intuitive information about your life, or sense future trajectories — without communicating with spirits.
Clairvoyant specifically describes someone whose primary psychic sense is visual — they receive information through inner sight. A clairvoyant is a type of psychic, not a separate category.
Medium describes someone who communicates with the spirit world — specifically with deceased loved ones, spirit guides, and other non-physical beings. Mediumship requires all the psychic senses but adds a specific skill: the ability to raise your vibration high enough to meet spirits halfway. It's psychic ability plus a direct line to the other side.
In my practice, I use all four clairs simultaneously. Messages come through as images (clairvoyance), physical sensations (clairsentience), words and names (clairaudience), and sudden downloads of information (claircognizance). The clairs aren't separate channels — they're an orchestra, and spirit guides conduct them.
Signs You Might Have Psychic Abilities
Psychic abilities rarely arrive with a dramatic announcement. They're usually qualities you've always had — things you dismissed as coincidence, sensitivity, or imagination. Here are the signs:
1. You walk into a room and immediately feel the mood before anyone speaks.
2. You think of someone and they text or call within minutes.
3. You get gut feelings that defy logic — and they turn out to be right.
4. You have vivid dreams that contain information you couldn't have known.
5. You've been called 'too sensitive,' 'too intense,' or 'too much.'
6. Animals and children are drawn to you.
7. You experience physical symptoms in response to other people's emotions.
Clairsentience: The Psychic Ability Most People Already Have
If any single psychic sense deserves its own section, it's clairsentience — because it's the one most people have already experienced without realising it's psychic.
Clairsentience is the ability to receive information through feeling — both emotional feeling and physical sensation. Every empath is, by definition, clairsentient. The difference between being an unmanaged empath and being a developed clairsentient is the difference between being flooded by other people's emotions and being able to read them with clarity and choice.
In my own development, clairsentience was the first ability that emerged — though it took years before I understood what was happening. I'd feel sudden sadness in a conversation and assume it was mine. I'd walk into buildings and feel overwhelming heaviness with no apparent cause. I'd meet someone and instantly feel uneasy despite them being perfectly pleasant. The feelings were accurate — they just weren't mine.
Developing clairsentience means learning to distinguish between your own emotions and information you're receiving from outside yourself. This requires: a consistent self-awareness practice, regular body scanning to establish your baseline emotional state, and the willingness to trust that what you're feeling might be data, not dysfunction.
Clairaudience: Hearing What Others Can't
Clairaudience — clear hearing — is often misunderstood as literally hearing voices speaking aloud. For most people, clairaudience is much subtler than that. It manifests as an inner voice, a dropped-in phrase, a name that appears in your awareness unbidden, or music playing in your mind with lyrics that directly answer a question you've been pondering.
The key distinction: clairaudient information has a different quality than your own internal monologue. Your own thoughts loop, repeat, and tend to carry emotional charge (anxiety, worry, hope). Clairaudient information arrives once, cleanly, often with a tone or phrasing that doesn't match your typical internal voice. It's like receiving a text message versus writing one.
In mediumship, clairaudience is how I receive names, specific phrases, and messages that carry the voice quality of the communicating spirit. A grandmother who spoke with a particular cadence will deliver her message in that cadence — and the sitter will recognise it. This is one of the most evidential forms of mediumship because the content is so specific it eliminates cold reading entirely.
Claircognizance: When You Just Know
Claircognizance is the hardest psychic sense to trust and the easiest to dismiss. It arrives without evidence, without a feeling, without an image, without a sound. You simply know something — completely, instantly, and without being able to explain how.
Claircognizant people are often told they're 'jumping to conclusions' or 'making assumptions.' But the difference between a conclusion and a claircognizant download is that conclusions are built from evidence. Claircognizant knowledge arrives whole, before evidence exists, and is later confirmed by events.
If you're claircognizant, your biggest challenge is trusting yourself. Because there's no 'proof' at the moment of knowing, the rational mind immediately tries to discredit the information. The development path for claircognizance is simple but difficult: start recording your 'knowings' — write them down the moment they arrive, with the date and context. Then track how many turn out to be accurate. The evidence will accumulate, and your trust in your own knowing will follow.
How to Develop Your Psychic Abilities — Honest Advice
I'm going to be direct about this, because the psychic development space is full of vague advice that sounds beautiful but doesn't actually work. Here's what does:
1. Identify your primary 'clair' and start there.
Don't try to develop all four simultaneously. Find the one that's already strongest — the sense you've been unconsciously using your whole life — and focus there. Trying to force clairvoyance when your natural gift is clairsentience is like training for a marathon when your talent is swimming.
2. Meditate — but not the way you think.
Psychic development meditation isn't about emptying your mind. It's about learning to sit in receptive awareness — open, quiet, and noticing what arrives. Start with 10 minutes daily of sitting in silence and paying attention to any images, feelings, sounds, or 'knowings' that float through. Don't judge them. Don't chase them. Just notice.
3. Practice with validation.
Psychic abilities develop fastest when you can verify your impressions. Practice with a willing friend: ask them to think of a specific memory while you sit quietly and report whatever impressions come to you. The hits will surprise you — and the misses will teach you the difference between genuine psychic information and your own imagination.
4. Do your shadow work.
Unprocessed emotional material interferes with psychic perception. Your shadow — the repressed fears, desires, and wounds you haven't addressed — creates static on the channel. The clearer your inner landscape, the clearer your reception. This is why my psychic development course includes shadow work as a non-negotiable component.
5. Work with a teacher.
You can develop psychic abilities on your own. But you'll develop faster, more safely, and with better discernment if you work with someone who's already walked the path. A good teacher does three things: validates your experiences, corrects your misinterpretations, and pushes you beyond your comfort zone. A bad teacher creates dependency. Choose carefully.

Every empath is psychic. Not every empath knows it.
Empathy — the ability to feel what others feel — is clairsentience operating at a basic level. The empath absorbs emotional and energetic information from their environment continuously, often without knowing it's happening. The result is chronic exhaustion, emotional overwhelm, difficulty in crowds, and a persistent sense that something is 'wrong' without being able to identify what.
The transition from unmanaged empath to developed psychic involves three shifts: first, learning to distinguish between your own emotions and received information (boundary setting). Second, learning to control when you're open and when you're closed (energetic hygiene). Third, learning to use the information you receive intentionally rather than being drowned by it (development).
Many of the women I work with in readings and courses are empaths who've spent their entire lives managing a psychic ability they didn't know they had. The relief of finally understanding what's been happening — and learning to work with it instead of against it — is one of the most transformative things I witness in my practice.
Intuition vs Anxiety — How to Tell the Difference
This is one of the most important distinctions in psychic development — and one that most teachers don't address honestly enough. Here's the truth: anxiety and intuition can feel almost identical, especially when you're first developing your abilities. Both produce physical sensations. Both generate a sense of 'knowing.' Both can be compelling.
But they operate differently, and learning to distinguish them is essential.
Anxiety:
Repetitive — the same worry loops over and over. Fear-based — it's always about what could go wrong. Future-oriented — it projects disaster onto situations that haven't happened. Gets louder the more you engage with it. Feels contracted — chest tightening, stomach clenching, throat closing. Carries emotional charge — panic, dread, spiralling. After engaging with it, you feel worse.
Intuition:
Non-repetitive — it arrives once, clearly, and doesn't need to argue its case. Present-tense — it's about what is, not what might be. Neutral tone — even when the information is difficult, it arrives without panic. Gets quieter if you ignore it — it doesn't chase you. Feels expansive — a settling, a clarity, an opening. After receiving it, you feel more grounded — even if the information itself is uncomfortable.
The simplest test: anxiety wants you to do something right now to make the feeling stop. Intuition simply informs and lets you choose. If the 'message' you're receiving creates urgency and panic, it's almost certainly anxiety. If it creates clarity — even unwelcome clarity — it's likely intuition.

Book a Private Reading →Can Anyone Become Clairvoyant?
Yes — with a caveat. Everyone has psychic potential, the same way everyone has musical potential. But not everyone will become a concert pianist, and not everyone will become a professional-level clairvoyant. What everyone can develop is a reliable, functional relationship with their intuitive and psychic senses — enough to guide their decisions, protect their energy, and deepen their spiritual connection.
The people who develop fastest tend to share certain traits: openness to experience, willingness to be wrong (and learn from it), emotional self-awareness, a meditation or contemplative practice, and — critically — a willingness to do the inner work that clears the channel. Ego death and spiritual crisis often accelerate psychic development because they strip away the layers of conditioning that block intuitive perception.
What I've observed in hundreds of students: the biggest barrier to psychic development isn't lack of ability. It's lack of trust. Most people receive psychic information regularly — and then immediately dismiss it because their rational mind can't verify it. The development path is less about gaining new abilities and more about learning to trust the ones you already have.
