50 Shadow Work Prompts for Deep Self-Discovery

Powerful questions your ego doesn't want you to answer — organised by past, present, and future, with guidance on how to use them from a psychic medium who's guided hundreds of women through their shadow.

Shadow work prompts are questions designed to surface the unconscious material you've been avoiding — the emotions, beliefs, and patterns hiding beneath your awareness. They're the fastest way to begin a shadow work practice, and they require nothing more than a journal, a pen, and the willingness to be honest.

I've compiled these 50 prompts from my own practice and from the questions I've seen produce the most powerful breakthroughs in my clients and students. They're organised into three categories: exploring your past, understanding your present, and building your future.

A word before you start: these prompts are not casual journaling exercises. Some of them will make you uncomfortable. Some will make you cry. That's the point. If a prompt triggers a strong reaction, that's your shadow telling you exactly where to dig.

If a prompt makes you want to skip it — that's the one you need most.

    How to Use These Prompts

Before diving into the prompts, here's how to get the most from them:

Work with one prompt per day, not ten.

Depth matters more than volume. One prompt explored honestly for fifteen minutes will shift more than ten prompts skimmed in an hour. Let each question sit with you throughout the day.

    Write without editing.

Don't censor yourself. Don't write what sounds 'evolved' or 'healed.' Write the raw, ugly, contradictory truth. Nobody is reading this but you. The shadow only shows itself when you stop performing.

    Notice your body.

As you write, pay attention to physical sensations — tightness in your chest, heat in your face, a knot in your stomach. These are signals. Your body stores what your mind represses.

    Don't rush to resolve.

The instinct after surfacing something painful is to immediately 'heal' it or explain it away. Resist that. The practice is sitting with what you find — not fixing it. Integration happens on its own timeline.

Shadow Work Prompts for Exploring Your Past

These prompts help you trace your current patterns back to their origins — the childhood experiences, family dynamics, and early beliefs that shaped the shadow you carry today.

    1. 1.What emotion was I punished for expressing as a child?
    2. 2.What did my parents value most — and what did they reject?
    3. 3.When was the first time I learned to hide a part of myself?
    4. 4.What is the earliest memory I have of feeling ashamed?
    5. 5.What role was I assigned in my family — the responsible one, the quiet one, the peacekeeper — and how does it still show up today?
    6. 6.What did I want to be before I was told what to be?
    7. 7.What is the lie I've been telling myself the longest?
    8. 8.Who did I have to become to feel safe?
    9. 9.What anger am I still carrying from childhood that I've never fully expressed?
    10. 10.What grief have I never allowed myself to fully feel?
    11. 11.What was I taught about money, success, or ambition that I've never questioned?
    12. 12.What part of my mother do I see in myself that I've tried to reject?
    13. 13.What part of my father do I see in myself that I've tried to reject?
    14. 14.What was I told about my body, my appearance, or my worth that I still carry?
    15. 15.What secret have I been keeping since childhood — and what would happen if I spoke it?
    16. 16.When did I first learn that my needs were too much?
    17. 17.What did love look like in my childhood home — and how has that shaped what I accept now?

Shadow Work Prompts for Understanding Your Present

These prompts illuminate how your shadow operates in your current life — in your relationships, your work, your self-image, and the patterns you can't seem to break.

    1. 18.What personality trait do I judge most harshly in others — and where does it live in me?
    2. 19.What compliment do I have the hardest time receiving?
    3. 20.What am I pretending not to know about my life right now?
    4. 21.Where am I performing instead of being authentic?
    5. 22.What relationship am I maintaining out of obligation rather than genuine desire?
    6. 23.What would I do differently if I knew nobody would judge me?
    7. 24.What am I afraid people would think of me if they knew the full truth?
    8. 25.What part of myself have I abandoned to keep the peace?
    9. 26.Where am I settling — and what story am I telling myself to justify it?
    10. 27.What do I need that I'm ashamed to ask for?
    11. 28.What pattern keeps repeating in my relationships — and what is it trying to show me?
    12. 29.When did I last feel truly, completely myself — and what was different about that moment?
    13. 30.What am I addicted to that I won't call an addiction? (Work, approval, control, distraction, busyness)
    14. 31.What emotion am I most afraid of feeling — and what would happen if I let myself feel it fully?
    15. 32.Where in my life am I using 'being realistic' as an excuse for being afraid?
    16. 33.What is my body trying to tell me that I keep ignoring?

Shadow Work Prompts for Building Your Future

These prompts shift from excavation to construction — they help you imagine and move toward the life that exists on the other side of your shadow work.

    1. 34.What gift or ability have I suppressed because someone told me it was 'too much'?
    2. 35.If my shadow self could speak freely, what would it say to me right now?
    3. 36.What would it look like to live one full week without seeking anyone's approval?
    4. 37.What boundary have I been afraid to set — and what is the real cost of not setting it?
    5. 38.What is my spirit or intuition trying to tell me that I keep pushing away?
    6. 39.What does my most authentic life look like — described in specific detail, without compromise?
    7. 40.What am I ready to forgive myself for?
    8. 41.What am I ready to stop carrying for other people?
    9. 42.What would change if I stopped trying to be good and started trying to be real?
    10. 43.What is the conversation I've been avoiding — and what would actually happen if I had it?
    11. 44.What would I create, build, or pursue if failure weren't possible?
    12. 45.What am I more afraid of — failing or succeeding?
    13. 46.Who would I need to disappoint in order to live authentically?
    14. 47.What does 'enough' actually look like for me — not for my family, not for society, for me?
    15. 48.If I only had one year left, what would I immediately stop doing?
    16. 49.What is the version of me that I'm most afraid to become — and what if she's the real one?
    17. 50.What message has been trying to reach me that I've been refusing to hear?

That last question is the one your spirit guides have been asking you. Quietly. Persistently. For longer than you think.

What to Do After Journaling — When the Prompts Aren't Enough

Shadow work prompts are a beginning — not the entire journey. If you've been working with these prompts and you're hitting a wall, feeling overwhelmed, or sensing that there's something deeper just out of reach, here's what I recommend:

Go deeper with the full framework.

These prompts are drawn from the shadow work components of my Surrender Sequence course. If what you're experiencing feels like more than a journaling exercise — if it feels like a full spiritual transition — the course gives you the structure, guidance, and container to navigate all seven stages.

    Get a mirror.

Some shadow material can't be accessed alone. It requires someone outside of you to reflect back what you can't see. A therapist, a trusted mentor, or a spiritual guide can illuminate what's been hiding in your blind spot. That's what my readings are for — your spirit guides can see what your ego is hiding from you.

    Join a practice.

Shadow work done in community is more powerful than shadow work done alone. Witnessing others' shadows gives you permission to face your own. The Practice Circle includes shadow work as part of its weekly practice.
